Why was Sunny Leone invited on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6?

So everyone was expecting something spectacular. After all, when we heard that adult movie star-turned-Bollywood babe Sunny Leone was doing a guest spot on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6, we just knew that there would be fireworks. Lots of dhamaal would happen, we could be sure. There would be beauty, brawn and lots of seetis, to spice up the jhatkas and matkas that any special performance would have. But no. All we got was a giant sized headache. Sunny came, dressed in a really strange costume of harem pants tucked into spike heeled boots, the rest of the outfit a matter of glitter, sequins, fringe and hair extensions. She arrived with a harem of extras, all of whom danced vigorously, enthusiastically. But Ms Leone, much as we admire her chutzpah and gumption to give B-town a dekho, is hardly a dancer – we saw that on the big screen with Laila teri le legi from Shootout at Wadala and knew it with this extraordinarily brief appearance on the dance reality show last weekend. Do we even remember what she did, before she was carried off the stage by the newly-skinny, enterprising and over-bubbly Manish Paul? Ummm….

We must admit this though – that few-minute-long presence of the lissome lass on the Jhalak stage was far more rewarding than the two other…err…participants that the recruiters have dragged in. There was Suresh Menon, who seemed to have wandered in from some strange comedy show on another planet. He did his best to look like he was dancing, but even his two left feet had major coordination and timing issues. He was the first elimination. And then they brought in the ebullient former cricketer Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who would not know a dance step from a Gucci gown if it had no label. He is enthusiastic, happy, even funny (if you plug your ears), but rather difficult to watch. Will he last? We fervently hope not. This is supposed to be a dance contest, so we expect some kind of dance – yeah yeah, we know, it is about growth and evolution, blah blah. But with the standards of other participants like Drashti Dhami, Lauren Gottlieb and even non-dancer singer Shaan, there should be a base level from which they start, no?

Any which way, so far we are not impressed – not with Sunny, nor with the organisers. We wait for things to get better…
