Whistle Blown for the 3-Selected Candidates for the Governor Race!

KATHMANDU: After the deep investigation and analysis the selection committee headed by the Finance minister Ram sharan Mahat has able to select three candidate for the post of Governer of the Rastra Bank.   The process of selecting a new central bank governor formally began 3 weeks back with the formation of a three-member committee under Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat. The committee was formed less than a month ahead of formal retirement of incumbent NRB Governor Yubaraj Khatiwada. The committee, formed by the Cabinet comprises Himalaya Shumsher Rana and Pathiveshwor Prasad Timilsina as members.Rana is the first central bank governor, while Timilsina has previously served as the board director of Nepal Rastra Bank.

The main responsibility of the committee is to identify candidates who have the potential to lead NRB for the next five years. As per Nepal Rastra Bank, the committee must recommend names of three persons for the governor’s post . At least one of such persons should be incumbent deputy NRB governor and the other two should be renowned in the field of economics, banking, finance, commerce, management or commercial law. The committee following the above mentioned criteria has forwarded the list of 3 selected candidates to the Cabinet. Although the Cabinet has not given any deadline to the committee to make the recommendations, the entire work of selection will be wrapped up within this week.

Although the governor selection process is generally concluded a month before the formal retirement of the incumbent governor, it has been delayed this time. This is also because the incumbent governor has not stayed on leave a month prior to his retirement.

Selected Candidate:

NRB staffer that the new governor should be nominated from within the central bank itself. Deputy Governor Gopal Prashad Kafley, who has been serving in the bank for more than three decade, is a suitable candidate
for the post, they pointed out. Kafley is not only a clean and dedicated staff of the bank, but also an experienced person in the banking sector, pointed out economic observers.
Controversy may arise if people from non-banking sector gets appointed for the post of governor, argue observers. A democrat by principle, Kafley, has been involved in various reform programmes initiated by the central bank in an attempt to regularize the banking sector. The banking sector will get a strong and dedicated leader in his appointment. Moreover, he has also returned his US based PR to the concerned authorities a couple years ago to avoid any controversy while serving in the banking sector.

Mr.Maha Prashad Adhikari  has completed Chartered Accountancy from the Institute of Chartered Accounts of India in 1993. He is the another capable Deputy governor of Rastra Bank   . 30’s year of being the employe  of Rastra Bank , he is another capable candidate for governor.  He is tilted towards the CPUML political ideology .If we take a reference of rumors spreading in the capital ,  among the three candidate his chance is very low.

Dr. Chiranjivi Nepal is another selected candidate among the 3 people. Currently he is working as the Economic advisor of Prime Minister Sushil Koirala. As it has great hand of prime minister on selection process he is suspected to be the most nearest in race of governor ,on the other hand he is also the choice of current finance minister .He do have experience of serving the ministry of finance and the ministry of foreign affairs as advisor/ analyst for many years . Along with that he is considered as the most media friendly economist as well as popular economist within the private sectors . He has been actively advocating of liberal economy within the country since a decade back.He has done his PHD from the Banaras Hindu Universty in 1994.

It is expected that tomorrow cabinet meeting will select one among Dr. Nepal,Khafle and Adhikari.
