Nepal’s Narayani and Koshi rivers cross danger level, water level rising

There is possibility of flash floods in some districts of State-1, all districts of State-2 and many districts of Bagmati, Gandaki, Karnali and Sudur Paschim states today.

CHITWAN:- Life in most parts of the country including in Kathmandu Valley has been affected due to the incessant rainfall since two days. Landslide and flood has taken pace in several places, blocking the highways.

In this context, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has suggested adoption of appropriate alertness citing high risk of disaster as heavy rain continues at present also. As per the Flood Forecasting Division, the Narayani and Koshi rivers have crossed the danger level since Monday. Inundation has started taking place at many places. The Flood Measurement Centre Devghat stated that the water level in the Narayani river has reached 9.9 metres this morning.

The danger level of Narayani is eight metres. Likewise, the water level in the Koshi river has reached 11.97 metres. The danger level of the Koshi river is at 11 metres. The water level continues to rise. Hydrologist at the Flood Forecasting Division, Sunil Pokharel, said the downstream area and places close to the river bank including Susta area are at high risk of inundation due to the swollen Narayani river. As per the Flood Measurement Centre Makawanpur, the water level in the Rapti river that flows through Makawanpur and Chitwan also continues to increase reaching close to the danger level.

It is estimated that the Rapti river will reach up to the danger level today. This will directly lead to inundation in Sauraha and surrounding areas. Water level in the Rapti river has crossed the alertness level of 3.30 metres and reached 3.36 metres. The danger level in this river is at 3.70 metres. Likewise, water level in the Riu river at Madi of Chitwan is also rising and is likely to reach the danger level today.

The Division said the areas near the bank of the Bagmati river and its tributaries in Kathmandu Valley are also at high risk of flooding and therefore alertness was warranted. In like manner, the Division has urged for adopting precaution as the water level is on the rise in the Kankai, Kamala, Bagmati, West Rapti, Babai and their tributaries. It stated that Tinau was on the verge of reaching the danger mark and the water level in Karnali and Mahakali rivers is also going to rise. The water level in the rivers including Biring, Bakraha, Ninda, Lohandra, Chisangkhola, Triyuga, Khado, Churiyakhola, Lalbakaiya and Banganga among other rivers flowing through State-1, State-2 and State-5, the rivers in Gandaki State and most of the rivers flowing through the Chure and Tarai region in Sudur Paschim State will rise, reaching up to the alertness level while reaching up to the danger mark in some of the rivers.

There is possibility of flash floods in some districts of State-1, all districts of State-2 and many districts of Bagmati, Gandaki, Karnali and Sudur Paschim states today. It is said the water level in the Koshi and Narayani rivers will decrease on July 22 and remain around the alertness level. But the water level in the Kamala, Bagmati, Tinau, Paschim Rapti, Babai rivers will increase while occasionally reaching up to the danger level in some.
