Visiting NC President Koirala continues parleys in India; Sonia suggests for Federalism based on economic capacity


NEW DELHI: President of Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala, who is currently on a six-day long visit to India, has continued his consultations with leaders of different political parties. NC President Koirala held a meeting with Chairperson of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday.

During her meeting with Koirala, Gandhi has suggested that it would be better to carve out federal states in Nepal based on the economic potentiality of the states. Gandhi said Koirala that she had the desire to visit Nepal after the Constituent Assembly elections in the Himalayan nation.

General Secretary of NC Prakash Man Singh, who is accompanying Koirala on the India visit, informed that Koirala said that federalism in Nepal would be based on economic capacity and identity. Also on the occasion, Koirala expressed his confidence that the CA election in Nepal would take place at the scheduled date of November 19 with the participation of all the political parties.

Meanwhile, Koirala also met Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, BJP President Rajnath Singh and fellow BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, also the opposition leader in Lok Sabha. Yesterday, Koirala had met Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

During his meeting with Koirala India’s key opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajnath Singh has suggested that Nepal be declared a ‘Hindu nation’ again. However, Singh said it was up to Nepal to take a decision to this effect and that he or India will not interfere in the internal matters of Nepal. Speaking about election, Singh said the event would be instrumental in institutionalizing democracy in Nepal.

Earlier, Koirala held discussions with Indian minister for external affairs, Salman Khurshid and shared ideas on how the bilateral relations between the two neighbors could be strengthened. They also discussed the forthcoming election in Nepal, for which Khurshid reiterated Indian cooperation to make the event successful.

The NC President is scheduled to visit the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and meet their respective Chief Ministers before returning back to Kathmandu.

The Indian Government has given top priority to the visit of NC President. This is the fourth visit of Nepali leaders to India. Earlier, UCPN-Maoist chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, senior leader of Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba and senior leader of CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal. Indian government has been taking stock of political situation of Nepal and the elections of the constituent assembly by inviting leaders of different political parties to India.
