BHAIRAHAWA: Cases of violence against women and children increased in Rupandehi district, according to the records of past three years.
District Police Office Rupandehi registered 697 violence against women (VAW) and violence against children cases in the fiscal year 2018/19. However, in the fiscal year of 2017/18 and 2016/17 records, only 583 and 537 VAW cases were registered respectively.
In terms of nature of VAW cases, highest rate of rape cases were registered in the fiscal year 2018/19 with 70 cases, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Dharma Raj Bhandari.
Similarly, 17 cases of human trafficking, 43 of polygamy, one child marriage, three murder cases and 31 natural death cases were registered. Likewise, 55 people killed themselves by hanging, 25 by taking poison, and three killed by self-immolation.
Likewise, 29 domestic violence and five public offence cases were registered at the district police office last year, according to DSP Bhandari.
Women and children missing cases also went up the last fiscal year. Among 527 persons who went missing, 320 were women, 66 boys and 141 girls. Of them 439 were found later. However, in the fiscal year 2017/18, a total of 272 people had gone missing, and among them, 263 came to a contact.
Also, in fiscal year 2016/17, a total of 298 people had gone missing, and among them, 156 were found.
