KATHMANDU: As the issue of resignation of the Chairperson of the Interim Election Government Khil Raj Regmi should resign from the post of Chief Justice has intensified intra-party rift, Vice President of Nepali Congress Ram Chandra Poudel has said that once Chairman Regmi resigns as Chief Justice, it would create problems in government and Constituent Assembly election.
The statement of Poudel came at a time when President of Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala has informed Regmi should resign from the post of Chief Justice. Poudel has also defended the statement of party president during the meeting of the High Level Political Committee.
“It is a constitutional provision that incumbent Chief Justice becomes the Chairman of the election Council of Ministers. And, once he resigns from the CJ post, it would create new problem as who would be the head of government. Therefore, CA election must be held within third week of November to give political outlet, and rid the country from further crisis,” he stressed.
Speaking at a program organized by Nepal Student Union’s Lamjung-Kathmandu Liaison Committee in the Capital today, leader Paudel said party President Sushil Koirala had not demanded Chairman Regmi’s resignation but given suggestion to the Chairman Regmi to address the demands of agitating parties including Mohan Baidya-led CPN-Maoist.
Moreover, Vice-President Paudel said there are several countries including Greece and Bangladesh which had the election under the leadership of Chief Justice. It was quite condemnable on the part of some legal practitioners and civil society representatives to object to the present government, he added.
Similarly, he said he would fight under the direct election in the coming CA election disregarding what the top leaders do. During the program he honored the Cine Artist Nisha Adhikari, who scaled the highest peak of the world recently. She is from Lamjung district.
