By N24 Correspondent, WASHINGTON DC:- The Biden administration will call back around 25,000 asylum seekers, whose cases were pending at the US courts of law and were sent to the makeshift camps in the border towns of Mexico until their cases were settled.
According to officials at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), up to 300 asylum cases of the 25,000 migrants sent to Mexico during Trump administration could be processed on a daily basis from next week.
Inside the US, the asylum seekers will be monitored through “alternative detention” mechanism, under which they will have to wear the “ankle bracelets” for remote monitoring throughout the court proceedings.
A Covid-19 test of the asylum seekers will be done and the report has to be negative for an entry into the US. The DHS will not process the cases of those who already have deportation orders, or whose asylum cases were already closed.
The asylum seekers will have to first register with the non-profits working in those camps, as those organizations will identify the most vulnerable people for allocating them a priority for processing.
Despite processing those 25,000 cases, the Biden administration, however, has made it clear that it will not accept most of the new asylum cases at the US-Mexico border.
“Now is not the time to come, and the vast majority of people will be turned away. Asylum processes at the border will not occur immediately; it will take time to implement,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was earlier quoted as saying.
