US Senate passed much awaited Immigration Bill; 11 million people to benefit

Purushottam Dhakal / VIRGINIA: The U.S. Senate passed a much awaited landmark comprehensive immigration bill on Thursday that would offer an earned citizenship for about 11 million undocumented immigrants and tighten security on the Mexican border.

The bill had been approved by 68 to 32, more than the majority needed to send the measure to the House. Fourteen of the 46 Republicans in the 100-member chamber joined all 52 Democrats and two independents to support the bill, which tops President Barack Obama’s second-term domestic agenda.

As per the bill, illegal immigrants will receive work permit for 10 years. However they have to wait 10 more years to get American green card and three more years for citizenship certificate.

After the approval of the bill border security has been tightened and the government will enforce some laws like not to allow any person for the stay in the US apart from the visa date. As per the bill the green card holders will be able to bring their spouse to the United States immediately and provide opportunity to create quota to the students, who have completed Masters Degree.

With the approval of the bill Republican Senators have demanded to make special provisions for skilled laborers of India and China, provide permanent residency to the persons completing master’s degree from US University among others.

The bill now will move to the House for discussion. President Obama has pledged to approve the bill during his first tenure in 2010 but he could not succeed due to Republican senators. During his second election President Obama has put this agenda in his top priority list. With the approval of the bill, Nepali Community has also expressed happiness over the move. The Illegal Nepali Immigrants became happy to get opportunity to stay in the United States after the approval of the bill.
