UN and Nepal share strong, unique relations: Minister Dr Rijal


By Narayan Neupane, KIMATHANKA:- Minister for Defence Dr Minendra Rijal said Nepal became renowned as the ‘country of peacekeepers’ due to the Nepali peacekeepers’ remarkable contributions, tireless efforts and firm determination in establishing world peace. It brought glory to the country, he added.
At an event organized by the Nepal Army at Paanchkhal in Kavrepalanchowk on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the United Nations on Sunday, Minister Dr Rijal said Nepal had become one of the credible partners of the UN with demonstration of the highest level of professionalism by the Nepali peacekeepers.
“Nepal always emphasizes enhancing quality of the Nepali peacekeepers than increasing their quantity,” Rijal said.
Of the 43 peacekeeping missions across the warring and war-torn countries in the world, a total of 135,399 Nepali peacekeepers have so far contributed for the cause of world peace. Currently, 5,168 Nepali peacekeepers including 181 female were deployed in 12 peacekeeping missions abroad.
Minister Rijal acknowledged that the Nepali peacekeepers’ contribution in maintaining world peace had a glorious history and Nepal and UN have been enjoying a strong and unique relations marked by trust, cooperation and mutual trust. “I believe Nepal’s current rank as the third highest troops/police-contributing country’ stands a testimony to the fact that Nepal collaborates with the people in different parts of the world to end the conflict,” the Minister remarked.
Stating that Nepal, which became the member of the UN in 1955, adheres to the principle of ‘Amity with all; enmity with none’, Minister Rijal said that Nepal firmly believes in the purpose and principles of the UN Charter and international laws.
On the occasion, he extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the loved ones of the fallen peacekeepers, both military and civilian who made ultimate sacrifice for the noble cause of peace and humanity.
He also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured peacekeepers worldwide.
Similarly, United Nations Development Programme’s Resident Representatives Ayshanie Medagangoda-Labe commended the role of the Nepali peacekeepers in UN’s efforts to maintain world peace and for humanitarian assistance programmes.
Likewise, Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Bal Krishna Karki said that disciplined and professional human resources of the Nepal Army had fulfilled their responsibilities successfully in whatsoever challenging times.
Nepal Army Peacekeeping Directorate Chief Brigadier General Sudarshan Silwal observed that Nepal had a glorious history in peacekeeping troops.
Earlier, a UN’s flag was hoisted and garland offered at the peace memorial in honour of the fallen peacekeepers who died in line of duty over different period of time.
The ‘Dag Hammarskjold Medal’ posthumously conferred on the Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Kabindra Jung Thapa was handed over to his family. Thapa died in the rebellion’s attack while working for peacekeeping force in Congo.
An appreciation letter was also presented to the Thapa’s spouse on the behalf of the Nepal Army.
The event marked the presence of the Secretary at the Ministry of Defence, Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mayor of Paanchkhal Municipality, heads of the foreign diplomatic missions in Nepal, chief of the security agencies and former peacekeepers, among others. RSS
