KATHMANDU: Following intra-party rift and growing dissatisfaction within the party, the extended meeting of the UCPN-Maoist embraced the single leadership system proposed by its chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal therby further empowering Dahal’s position in the party,
Earlier, Dahal had floated a proposal at the ongoing extended plenum to dissolve the four office bearers’ positions with just the position of a Chairman and the rest of the others as Central Committee members. With the endorsement of Dahal’s proposal, the party has now entered into a single leadership system until a national convention slated to be held after the Constituent Assembly (CA) election.
The move was part of a plan to resolve the serious dispute that was seen in the top leadership of the party regarding party posts following Baburam Bhattarai’s sudden resignation from the post of vice chairperson following dispute in the appointment of key portfolios of the party.
Speaking at the closed session of the plenum on Saturday, a majority of the plenum representatives supported Dahal’s proposal, with ‘marginal voices against it.’ Leaders close to party vice-chairperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha and General Secretary Posta Bahadur Bogati opposed the proposal as they wanted to retain their portfolios.
Vice-chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha and General Secretary Post Bahadur Bogati on Saturday had resigned from their respective positions in line with Dahal’s proposal. While acknowledging that he was now the only office bearer of the party, Chairman Dahal said that he would constitute a party Secretariat including former office bearers.
“I will operate the party taking suggestion and advice from all sides, despite the fact that we have now entered a single leadership system,” Dahal said on the final day of the party’s three-day extended meeting of the central committee in Kathmandu.
As Dahal’s proposal has been endorsed, the UCPN-Maoist will only have the central committee, dissolving the standing committee and the politburo, too.
