KATHMANDU: Immediately after the Constitutional Council recommended former Chief Secretary Lokman Singh Karki as the Chief of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), students affiliated to various political parties have decided to stage protests against the recommendation.
The student unions decided to stage demonstration and protest programs charging that the recommendation was against the mandate and sentiment of the people’s movement-II.
A meeting of the Constitutional Council in Kathmandu earlier today had decided to recommend Karki as the Chief of the anti-graft body. Karki is guilty of suppressing the people’s movement in 2005/06 when he was then Chief Secretary.
Nepal Student’s Union spokesperson UP Lamichhane said that they have called for a joint meeting of 11 different student organizations on Monday to take a call on the nature of the protest.
Meanwhile, Nepali Congress (NC) president Sushil Koirala reiterated his stance that his party won’t allow former bureaucrat Lokman Singh Karki to become chief of the CIAA.
Speaking at a press conference organized by his party in Kapilvastu on Sunday, Koirala informed that the name of the Karki was first recommended by the UCPN-Maoist Chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal and later lapped up by other parties including NC, adding that he expressed his apologies for the same.
“People are protesting against the proposal to appoint Karki as the chief of the anti graft body. CPN-UML is also not in favor of his appointment and now Congress is openly objecting to Karki’s appointment. Our party won’t let the recommendation be implemented,” Koirala who is leading the High Level Political Committee said.
He warned that if Karki is appointed as the chief of the CIAA, the anti corruption watch dog then the country would plunge into crisis.
