Special Court sends notorious don Lama to judicial custody

KATHMANDU: The Special Court on Wednesday sent notorious don Ganesh Lama to judicial custody on Wednesday on charges of amassing millions of rupees through illegal means.

Registrar of the Special Court Dhir Bahadur Chand informed that Lama was sent to the Singha Durbar-based Metropolitan Police Sector as his statement could not be completely recorded today due to lack of time. Chand informed that Lama will be presented before the Court at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

Lama, who is also a Central Committee member of the Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar-led Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Democratic, has been charged with accumulating property worth Rs 270.1 million through illegal means.

The Department of Money Laundering Investigation on May 19 had filed separate cases against five ‘notorious dons’, including Lama, at the Special Court on charge of amassing millions of rupees through illegal means .

The Department of Money Laundering Investigation had filed separate charge sheets against Deepak Manange, Abhishek Giri, Chakre Milan and Krishna Basnet aka Parshuram, besides Lama. Most of the notorious dons have been creating terror in public and have been engaged in illegal activities under the protection of Political parties.

After the Money Laundering Investigation Department filed cases against them on May 19, the Special Court had issued a notice to Lama and four others— to appear before it and defend the charges against them within 15 days. The deadline was further extended by 15 days to Lama. Though he had been defying the order and failed to meet the deadline, he appeared before the court today.
