Social Media Effects on Teens

Social media indeed the potential to influence teenagers negatively, particularly in the way it might affect their self-esteem. However, although there are dangers to consider when it comes to social media use, there are many positives that can be taken from it too.

Social Media is a big part of many teen lives. It has a huge impact on today’s teenagers. Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube are some of the popular social media platforms among teens these days. These Media have made both positive and negative impacts on teen’s life. We can say that there is a huge difference in previous generation teens and today generation teens. As a teenager myself, I think social media as a way for us teenagers to stay in touch with our friends, joining in on group conversations, meeting with new people. Most importantly, we use social media to keep up with different things going on in the world.

Observers have noticed lots of positive and negative impacts of social Media on their teenage children. The teenager’s life has completely changed from what it was 20 years ago. Teenage is a confusing stage in the life of a human, if not guided properly this time the teenagers are on the verge of falling into bad company. Social media allows people to hide into the mask of something they are not. Catfishing, rude comments, bullying, racism is popular after the teenagers hide behind that mask of something unknown. These media teach them stuff you shouldn’t do. Some toxic traits like hatred, jealousy also becomes very prominent in them. Seeing someone’s perfect lifestyle, perfect skin, and luxury will make them want it that too.

That will just make them demanding, and things like this will ultimately frustrate their parents too. Everything is interrelated these negative thoughts will overcome the positivity and goodness of what life will have to offer to them. Dulling their brains each past day that will lead to more mental problems such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, insomnia, ADHD, etc. Cyberbullying like hate speech and hate comments even leads some teenagers to put an end to their life. Being in one of the vulnerable stages of life teenager’s trust easily, they give their trust more to some strangers they find online rather than their siblings and parents. So some even wish if smartphones and internet hadn’t evolved so much although they are useful, and entertaining time-killers but seeing the teenager abuse it saddens them.

Social media indeed the potential to influence teenagers negatively, particularly in the way it might affect their self-esteem. However, although there are dangers to consider when it comes to social media use, there are many positives that can be taken from it too. These days we can find any type of information on social media. Studying is hard for most teens but with the help of social media, it has been a lot easier than before. One can share their ideas, plan, and information and can learn different new skills. It also encourages them to think outside of the box which is like exploring a new place where different skills are needed. It can help them to be more confident and independent. Most teenagers do see social media as a positive space that provides them with comfort and support. Social media is a space that’s powered by people and can, therefore, echo people’s very best intentions as well as their very worst. So, while there are risks associated with it, there are also numerous positive effects of social media on teenagers.

To keep away from all these disadvantages teens should be given knowledge of ethics and codes while using social media. Parents, teachers and older siblings should pay close attention to what they are up to. As long as you’re not seeing it have any negative impact on your teen, you should encourage them to use social media. And teens should also think and use it properly and not use them to bully or do bad stuff or let them take over you. Social media is made to make people’s life easier, not to let them take over your life.
