LOS ANGELES: Shivaji Maharaj America Parivaar (SMAP) celebrated Coronation Anniversary of Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on Saturday June 8, 2019. The event took place at Skyline Hall, Cerritos Library and was attended by over 150 people.
The event started with snacks and networking from 7:00 pm to 8 pm. The event organizing committee and invited guests lit the lamp to start the event. The organizing community included — Vijay Patil, Bharat Saoji, Ashok Madan, Dr Sinduri, Ashutosh Khisti, Aparna Hande, Vilas Jadhav, Jagdish Gaikwad, and Charu Shivakumar.
The lamp lighting ceremony was followed by Ganesh song by Namrata Manikanandan, a 7th grade student. The host of the evening were Omkar Hanamsagar and Shravani Khisti, SMAP youth members and high school students.
Vijay Patil, SMAP founder and committee member then formally welcomed the audience and described the upcoming events. He highlighted an upcoming community service event called Feed LA organized by EOTO. “SMAP is one of the sponsors along with Salvation Army, Marshall’s and other organizations where we’ll donate 4,000 backpacks to students and distribute 90,000 lbs of canned food”, Patil said urging members to sign up and volunteer.
This was followed by brief presentation on SMAP membership structure by Shri Bharat Saoji. Aparna Hande and Ashutosh Khisti then welcomed the Guests of Honors. Dr Abhaya Asthana, President of VIshwa Hindu Parishad of America, Frank Yokoyama, Mayor Pro Tem of City of Cerritos, Ashok Patnaik, Cerritos, commissioner of Parks & Recreation, Kamlesh Chauhan, founder of Jagriti were some of the guests who were honored.
Next, Vilas Jadhav took the stage to present awards to community leaders. Shri Shashi Panat received an award for his outstanding contributions to the Indian community in the areas for Arts and Culture and Shri Avadhesh Agarwal was honored for supporting Indian American community in Southern California in the capacity of philanthropic service.
Shri Ashok Madan, executive committee members who was also honored by SMAP in 2018, then presented brief bio of Dr Abhaya Asthana and invited him to address the gathering. Dr Asthana described Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as an Indian National Hero who United india in a very adverse conditions. “Shivaji Maharaj was instrumental in preserving the culture of Southern part of Indian subcontinent”, he claimed.
This was followed by high energy patriotic songs presented by Pooja Desai who came from India and Vaibhav Ekbote and mesmerized the audience.
After a Dinner break, Kedar Deshpande and Pradnya Kuwadekar showed a movie of the 2019 Shiv Jayanti to the audience. Attendees enjoyed the delicious popcorns while watching the movie. The event ended at 11 pm.
SMAP nurtures the philosophy of Shri Shivaji Maharaj and promotes the values that he represented. The organization is primarily engaged in spreading Unity and Leadership in the community.
