KATHMANDU: Shashanka Koirala and Sitadevi Yadav have been elected as the general secretary and treasurer respectively of the Nepali Congress.
Both of them were candidates for the respective posts from the party establishment-led by Ram Chandra Paudel, who however was defeated in the election for president by Sher Bahadur Deuba.
In a three-side race, Koirala defeated the father-in-law-son-in-law duo of the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led panel’s Arjun Narsingh KC and Gagan Thapa of the Krishna Prasad Sitaula-led panel.
Shashanka Koirala: 1417
Arjun Narsingha KC: 1017
Gagan Thapa: 584
Sitadevi Yadav: 1217
Chitralekha Yadav: 1209
Umakanta Chaudhary: 457
Krishna Karki: 66
Sitadevi Yadav, on the other hand, had a tough competition with outgoing treasurer Chitralekha Yadav with other two candidates also on the race.
Koirala bagged 400 more votes than the nearest rival KC.
Youth leader Thapa, who was elected to the party’s Central Working Committee as a member in 2010 from the 12th General Convention of Nepali Congress in 2010 with the highest number of votes, however, was restricted to the third position with meagre 584 votes, which is less than half of what his father-in-law KC bagged.
Thapa, however, succeeded in garnering more votes than his leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula, who vied for the post of president.
In the vote count carried out the party’s central office in Sanepa, Sitadevi Yadav and Chitralekha Yadav raced head-to-head. But the former emerged as victorious garnering eight more votes than her nearest rival Chitralekha.
The third son of late BP Koirala, Shashanka Koirala is a Member of Parliament from Nawalparasi district. Trained as a medical doctor, he was elected as the Central Working Committee of Nepali Congress in 2010.
Now, the results of Central Working Committee members are awaited.
