SC asks Maoist Chief to furnish explanation on Contempt of Court charge; Maoist to launch tarai centered campaign

KATHMANDU: At a time when the Maoist party is trying to brighten its image for the elections of the constituent assembly and starting various campaigns, the Supreme Court has directed chairperson of UCPN-Maoist Pushpa Kamal Dahal to appear before the court within three days.

Acting upon a writ petition filed by advocate Dinesh Tripathi, a single bench of Justice Gyanendra Bahadur Karki issued the order. The court has directed Dahal to appear in person or furnish a written reply through his representative.

In his petition advocate Tripathi demanded maximum punishment according to Supreme Court Act 2048. According to legal provision, any person found contempting the court would be jailed for up to 10 years.

The advocate claimed that Dahal’s warning has challenged the judiciary and undermined its dignity. According to the petition, the August 22 statement, in which Dahal said he would not tolerate if cases were filed against his cadres in any court of law, has not only threatened the rule of law, but also questioned the sanctity of one of the state organs. “The apex court has the right to punish those, who disrespect it and any court under it as per Article 102(3) of the Interim Constitution. The court needs to assert its power to maintain its sanctity,” Tripathi stated.

Meanwhile, the UCPN-Maoist is all set to launch a special campaign in the districts of southern plain targeting November 19 CA elections.

The UCPN-Maoist has also claimed that people´s wave to the party in Tarai district is encouraging compared to past. Ram Chandra Jha, who had joined the UCPN-Maoist by deserting the CPN (UML) some months ago, has been appointed the in-charge of Madhes Bureau to launch the campaign effectively, targeting the upcoming election. Likewise, the party is expected to forge alliance with the likeminded political parties in the region. The party is likely to form alliance with Upendra Yadav led Madheshi Janadhikar Forum.

Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ´Prachanda´ has announced his candidacy from Dhanusha district while leader Dr Baburam Bhattarai will contest from Rupandehi district. The party has been collecting people´s suggestions from Madhes for drafting election manifesto.

The party is holding interactions in different parts of the city like Nepalgunj, Dhangadhi, Mahendranagar, Dang, Butwal, Chitwan, Birgunj, Sarlahi, Janakpur, Biratnagar and Dharan targetting the Madhesh.

During the first round of electoral campaign, the Maoist party has concluded that it would receive sizable presence in the next CA poll. The party has decided to launch second round of campaigns targeting the CA election especially in the areas where the party’s position is comparatively weaker.
