If you want the look and feel of a smartphone, but are worried that a fancy device won’t last long in your butterfingers, Samsung may have a solution.
According to the Wall Street Journal, a rugged version of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S 4 phone is in the works, and is expected to launch in July.
Tentatively named the Galaxy S 4 Active, the device will allegedly maintain the physical appearance of the Galaxy S 4, but will be made to withstand water and dust. The phone will likely be marketed toward the government for use in environments like war zones, the Journal said, and could be handy for construction workers or other corporate clients.
The paper also tipped a rugged 8-inch Samsung Galaxy tablet, as well as a smaller, 4.3-inch version of the 5-inch Galaxy S 4.
Samsung did not immediately respond to PCMag’s request for comment.
Earlier today, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Tab 3, a 7-inch tablet with a 1,024-by-600 pixel display and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, as well as a 3-megapixel back camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing cam.
A Wi-Fi-only version will hit global shelves beginning in May, while the 3G version, which can be used to make phone calls, will follow in June.
The U.S. rollout of the Galaxy S 4 was facing delays amidst supply constraints, prompting Sprint and T-Mobile to push back their larger Galaxy S 4 rollouts. Sprint today, however, said that Galaxy S 4 devices are “now flowing into Sprint sales channels” amidst a “strong response” for the smartphone.
Sprint retail partners are now ramping up production of the $249.99 phone, and the company expects additional inventory shipments on a daily basis. Interested customers can visit a brick-and-mortar Sprint Store, or check out the stock online or via Telesales at 1-800-SPRINT1.
