SAARC ministerial meeting likely in July

KATHMANDU: The meeting of foreign ministers of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is likely to be held in First Week of July.

According to media reports, Maldives, as incumbent chair of SAARC, has proposed a meeting of all SAARC foreign ministers in Male in the first week of July.

The convention of SAARC foreign ministers — also know as SAARC Council of Ministers — was called to review progress made by the bloc since its last summit, and to fix the date, venue and agenda for the next summit.

The Himalayan Times Daily quoted a senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) as saying that the time was tentatively decided to ask for the consent of all eight member states. Earlier, Maldives had proposed as many as five dates for the meet, but could not fix it given the inconvenience cited by some member states.

SAARC, a forum of South Asian Countries, formed to promote issues of interest of all the South Asian Countries has not been able to deliver good outputs as all the countries of the regional blocks are involved in their own interest and the forum is just converting into a talking forum.
