LALITPUR: SAARC Handicrafts Exhibition has kicked off at Mangalbazaar in Lalitpur today.
Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Yogesh Kumar Bhattarai inaugurated the event organized by the SAARC Culture Centre.
There are altogether 34 stalls in the exhibition being held in the Open Museum at Patan Durbar Square at Mangal Bazaar. Artefacts and craftworks created by the artists from other South Asian countries like Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan are put in display in the four-day event.
Stating that the Nepal-made handicrafts would contribute to making the Visit Nepal 2020 a success, Minister Bhattarai argued that all unique handicrafts of Nepal had played a significant role in attracting money from abroad to the country. He pressed for the need to make such handicrafts popular abroad and at home as well.
Likewise, Ministry Secretary Kedar Bahadur Adhikari emphasized handing over handicraft skills from one generation to another. He also underlined the need for conducting researches and studies on handicrafts.
SAARC Centre has been organizing various events annually. Last year, the Centre had organized classical dance where artistes from SAARC-member countries, according to Pradhan.
On the occasion, Lalitpur Metropolitan City Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan shared that Lalitpur was gaining popularity in the world for its time-tested and time-honoured artworks and handicrafts made in several historical era.
According to him, the UNSECO had declared Patan in Lalitpur to be the 35th Handicraft Town due to its rich heritage of handicrafts.
