Chiran Sharma, LONDON: The British helicopters, the CH47 Chinooks , sent to help with rescue efforts in Nepal after a week later following a devastating earthquake are to return which have been sitting in India for two weeks waiting for the permission to land in Nepal’s airport. Since then they have been stranded at Chandigarh Airbase north of Delhi, awaiting clearance to fly to Nepal.Their crew of around 40 people, including engineers and pilots, are also stranded at the airfield.
While waiting long in India in spite of having high level conversation with the government official there wasn’t any progress regarding the receiving of permission .In the telephonic conversation with the British Prime Minister David Caroon the Prime Minister Of Nepal Sushil Koirala told that as the stage of rescue and relief is about to complete there is no need of assistance related to it however Koirala asked Camroon that their help support and assistance is greatly needed at the phase of reconstruction.Previously , Nepal’s government claimed it had denied entry to the aircraft – which have been sitting in India for two weeks – because of fears they could damage buildings when landing because of its loud noise.
British authority has asking the permission relying on the precedent that in 1984 when there was food crissis in Karnali Chinooks were the one to assist . There has been different speculation regarding the rejection of British Chinooks for the rescue and relief operation it is said that its due to Chinese influence in Nepal, with Beijing reluctant to have British aircraft flying close to their border. However, this scenario is unconfirmed and American aircraft remain operative across the devastated country.
Some of have also correlated this with the Col Kumar Lama detention case ,charges of extrajudicial detention and torture during the decade-long conflict between former Maoist rebels and the state forces. Nepaal government has taken it as the British intervention and Nepal Army has great objection regarding the detention of its high level officials. So it could be suspected that due to Nepali Army it might have been rejected.
Britain as being the oldest country having the diplomatic relation with Nepal , it might have hurt as it has sent it relief and rescue team one and half week later after the devastating earthquake where as the neighboring country India and China has sent their rescue and relief team just after 6 and 14 hours of incident .The other countries far from United Kingdom has also send their team within 48 hours of occurance of incident .The oldest country with the diplomatic relation definitely have sadden Nepal because of the delay processing of relief and rescue package. Relying on the fact that on the need of extreme supports and helps if the country with oldest diplomatic relation is much behind then there don’t count whether it bothers on the previous relation or not. However , there are many diplomat experts commented that Nepal shouldn’t have disapointed like that way to country which always gives priority to sovereignty and it is the one of the reliable donor country to Nepal too. To alive the British Empire more than 1 million of Nepalis has sacrificed their life in different battle, contrary to this fact British has repeatedly shown disrespectful behavior. Andrew Sparkes, controversial dictation to member of Constitutional Assembly regarding to ensure right to change religion in the upcoming constitution can be taken as the one example which forced Britain to call back his envoy.
