Restoration reports gaining credence

Staff Writer, KATHMANDU: With the Congress party hours away from electing a new leadership, the stage is possibly set for a possible revival of constitutional monarchy, with the lobbying for it getting feverish by the week.

The agenda which was talk of the town while the Congress party had convened for the session had ended up acquiring a certain degree of recognition when Dr Shashank Koirala who is expected to be the Congress general secretary had conceded, people willing, monarchy could have space in Nepal on the eve of the convention.

That the issue of reviving monarchy should come up on the eve of the Congress convention and that too from someone who is son of B P Koirala only suggests that by reviving monarchy the Congress party wants to relive the political orientation of the founder of the party.

The agenda had come up for early resolution following India visit of Prime Minister K P Oli last month which saw BJP leadership in New Delhi raising the issue and presenting it as the very foundation of Hindu state in Nepal.

The restoration of monarchy is being taken as a means to fight surge in Communist movement in Nepal in particular and in Indian sub-continent in general.

The BJP is particularly keen to reverse titanic political change in Nepal of 2008 when the Indian ruling establishment was under the influence of Indian Left. The UPA led by the Congress party professes secular credential, thus seeing no sense in Hindu monarch in India’s backyard.

As opposed to that the Hindu revivalist BJP sees wisdom and sense in restoring tradition and culture even if that demands overspreading into the political domain.

BJP follows the diktat and analysis of the RSS which advocates Hindu way of life something which is already reflecting in India too, with secular forces and members of the secular intelligentsia protesting the changes reflecting in the functioning of government and universities, among others.

Apart from reviving basic tenets of Hindu society, the revival of monarchy even if it is in constitutional avatar is seen as a shield against proselytization in Nepal which is casting influence in the region.

The donor agencies mainly from the northern Europe have firm roots in parts of the Indian sub-continent, thus casting impact on social fabric. The move has also got to do with curbing mushrooming of madrasas in tarai which are often centers of terrorism training bankrolled by Pakistani and Gulf sponsors and charities.

The RSS is believed to be having a wide network in Nepal and could have presented a report to the effect that secular Nepal is ending up fostering proselytization, thus eroding Hindu values in the Indian backyard.

Following the visit of Prime Minister Oli to New Delhi recently, there has been rise in Kathmandu jaunts of influential leaders from BJP, thus giving credence to the reports that monarchy could be back with only thing that remains to be known being how they are going to install the king.

However the agenda may go into wider political debate and possible conclusion only after the Congress party comes to power amid growing speculation that the Oli government may be pulled down once the Congress elects a new party leadership, with Sher Bahadur Deuba billed to take over the leadership.
