KATHMANDU: As the government did not get support from political parties for creating environment for holding the elections of the constituent assembly, Chairperson of the Interim Election Government Khil Raj Regmi has appealed to the general public to get mentally prepared for the second elections of the Constituent Assembly (CA).
Releasing a collection of bhajans titled “Flames of Devotion” by sculptor Thakur Prasad Mainali in the capital on Friday, Regmi appealed all not to distrust the CA just because it failed once. “There is no alternative to giving the nation a new constitution by making the upcoming CA elections successful,” he added. Regmi government has been facing criticisms for its inability to announce the election date even after almost two months of assuming office.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Interim Election Government Khil Raj Regmi held discussion with senior leaders of 12 fringe parties on the various provisions of the proposed Ordinance on CA member election and the issue of declaration of the date for the elections. Leaders of CPN-United, CPN-ML, Nepal Republic Party, Janta Dal United, Rastriya Janamorcha, Nepal Democratic Party, NawaNepal Nirman Party, National Sadbhawana Party, Federal Sadbhawana Party among others took part in today’s meeting.
During the meeting the participating party leaders expressed their views on the proposed threshold for parties to be eligible for PR seats in the CA, the number of PR seats and the requirement of signature of 10,000 voters for party registration.
During the meeting, Chairman Regmi said the Government was serious towards addressing the various recommendations and views expressed by the political parties towards the various provisions in the Ordinance.
Leaders of the 12 parties on the occasion urged the government to address the complexities seen in the proposal of a threshold, number of PR seats and the party registration requirement in consideration of the sentiment of all sides concerned.
In another incident, senior leader of Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba informed that the date for the CA poll should be announced 90 days before the elections. Deuba said that announcing election date right now would create more problems apart from proving costly.
Meanwhile, Deuba contradicted his party’s position on maintaining one percent threshold for representation in the would-be Constituent Assembly, saying that threshold is unnecessary
