
KATHMANDU: A massive fire that broke out in the tourist hub of Thamel in Kathmandu on Thursday night has not been brought under control even until Friday morning. The fire was detected around 10 pm.
According to Hemanta Pal, spokesperson at Metropolitan Police Commissioner´s Office, the fire had started from Faces Club last night. Pal informed that firefighters of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur could only bring under control 70% of fire despite their utmost effort to control a blaze since eight hours.
According to him, it has destroyed property worth around 200 million rupees so far. Although there has been no report of casualties, police said that one person suffered minor injuries in the blaze that started from a building near the famous Kathmandu Guest House. The reason of the fire was yet to be confirmed, but it is learnt that the building from where the blaze started was made of wood and was prone to catching fire.
Meanwhile, the fire had also spread to Thamel-based Pilgrim Books House and destroyed the books stored at the shop. Thamel is a popular tourist destination in Kathmandu. It has been the centre of the tourist industry for over four decades.
