President requests Regmi to remove constitutional barriers for mobilizing Army

KATHMANDU: President Ram Baran Yadav has asked the Interim Election Council Chairman Khil Raj Regmi to remove the constitutional barriers first, so that the national army could be legitimately mobilized during election. Press Adviser of President Dr. Yadav Rajendra Dahal informed that president has requested the government to present the proposal to him after fulfilling necessary criteria.

In the interim constitution, it has been provisioned that Nepal Army can be brought out of barrack only during natural disasters. As per the recommendation of the National Defense Council, the government has sent the proposal of mobilizing Nepal Army for the security of election amid threat from poll opposing parties to foil the electoral process.

During his meeting with Chairperson of the Interim Election Government, President made such request. In response, IEC Chair Regmi said that the government would first recommend to the President to amend the constitution in a way it permits the use of army during the election.

Earlier, the government asked the President to grant approval to mobilize at least 60,000 army personnel, along with police, armed police and temporary police, to ensure free and fair elections of the second Constituent Assembly in November this year
