By N24 Correspondent, KATHMANDU:- Right after staging a power show of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP)’s Nepal-Dahal faction in the capital, Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” rushed to meet Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun at the latter’s official residence in Lainchaur.
Prachanda was not alone, as his former colleague Baburam Bhattarai also accompanied him in the meeting. Bhattarai, who is currently the chairperson of Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP), had just returned from his visit to Terai districts.
“It is obvious Prachanda is going to hatch some conspiracies. Otherwise, he would not join hands with Bhattarai, who left the then Maoist party to pursue a political course on his own,” said a highly placed source, who did not want to be named.
“Vice President Pun, too, is a former Maoist and is very close to Prachanda. Given the grudges of Prachanda with President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Prachanda may be manipulating Vice President Pun to bypass President Bhandari and work as the acting President,” the source added.
Earlier, President Bhandari, as the ceremonial head of the country, approved the recommendation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to dissolve the House of Representatives and declare a fresh election.
“Prachanda wanted the President to disapprove PM Oli’s recommendation, which was not possible for a ceremonial head of state in a Westminster style of parliamentary system,” the source further said.
As for Vice President Pun, he can use his constitutional power only when President Bhandari is incapable of discharging her duty. Otherwise, it would be equal to a “coup” if the Vice President attempts to bypass the incumbent President.
