Poll opposing alliance announce general strike from Nov 11 to 20 to foil poll

KATHMANDU: Protesting the decision of the major political parties to go for the election of the Constituent Assembly (CA) slated for November 19, the 33-party alliance led by CPN-Maoist has announced 10-day general strike starting from November 11-20 to foil the Constituent Assembly (CA) elections.

A meeting of the alliance held on Thursday took decision to that effect, unveiling their new protest programs till the polls slated for November 19.

The alliance also reiterated that it would deploy its cadres at each voting booth to thwart the voting process. Likewise, the dissenting parties have decided to send warning letters to the aspiring candidates urging them to take back their election candidacy. As part of their protest program, the alliance will burn effigies of top leaders of major political parties on November 3.

The parties would put up black flags in front of the election candidates’ residence, run social boycott campaign and mobilize cadres in voting centers.

Addressing the press conference organized to announce the protest programs CPN-Maoist Secretary Dev Gurung claimed that the nation was moving towards army rule. He said the decision to mobilize army for election was against the peace accord.

“It is not the attempt to mobilize army. Conspiracies are afoot to gradually turn the nation into army rule through the chief justice,” said Gurung. The 33-party alliance, which sees the role of India for major parties moving for the election without taking the disgruntled factions on board, has announced to ban the plying of vehicles bearing Indian registration number from October 3.

However, UCPN-Maoist leader Narayankaji Shrestha is taking lead to bring the dissenting parties on board by taking major parties in confidence for the resignation of Chairperson of Interim Election Government Khil Raj Regmi from the post of Chief Justice. According to reports, Shrestha is trying to convince major political parties for the resignation of Regmi from the Post of Chief Justice and bring the dissenting parties on board.
