Pokharel says NC and CPN-UML not interested for election due to fear of defeat

KATHMANDU: As the indecisiveness of the political parties has been hampering the process of holding the elections of the constituent assembly, the major political parties have started blaming each other for sorry state of the country.

In such a blame game, a senior leader of UCPN-Maoist, the largest party of the dissolved constituent assembly, Lilamani Pokharel has blamed Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, the Election Commission, the government and the President of not wanting the election to the Constituent Assembly to take place at all.

Standing committee member of the party Pokharel added that another major leftist party CPN-UML does not want the election to happen as it is on the brink of suffering a vertical split. Pokharel was referring to recent move of some of the senior leaders of CPN-UML defecting the party to join UCPN-Maoist.

Encouraged from the entry of UML politburo members Ram Chandra Jha, Urmila Aryal and central member Lucky Sherpa to the UCPN-Maoist, he further claimed that soon all the influential leaders of CPN-UML will join his party. Earlier addressing a function in Bardiya, UCPN-Maoist chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ claimed that CPN-UML does not exist and urged people either to vote for UCPN-Maoist or the Nepali Congress.

Pokharel also claimed that NC is not interested for poll due to fear of losing the elections. He also blamed that NC and UML opposed the election threshold in order to decrease people’s representation in the Constituent Assembly. UCPN-Maoist and other fringe parties have been claiming that there should not be such threshold while NC and CPN-UML have been claiming that it should be there. Similarly the parties have also been differing on the qualification of the candidates for the election.
