PM to leave for UN General Assembly

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushil Koirala is visiting New York to address the 69th session of the UN General Assembly next month. Foreign Ministry officials told us that PM Koirala will leave for New York 10 to 12 days before his scheduled address to the General Assembly to undergo the follow-up treatment of lung cancer. He is likely to leave Kathmandu on September 14 or 16. His address to the UN General Assembly is scheduled for September 26. Koirala was diagnosed with lung cancer at New York-based Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in June and July. After five weeks of treatment, he returned home on July 22. MoFA Spokesperson Khaga Nath Adhikari also confirmed the news. “Visit preparations are under way. Though the exact date and programmes are yet to be finalised, the Prime Minister will leave for New York 10 to 12 days earlier because of his follow up treatment,” Adhikari said. Upon his discharge in early July, doctors involved in Koirala’s treatment had advised him to visit the Centre for follow-up checking within three months. Koirala will get follow-up check-up before addressing the General Assembly and will do so once again after the address, if doctors suggest, according to Foreign Ministry officials. The PM’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Dinesh Bhattarai, however, said that though Koirala will address the General Assembly on September 26, his official programme will commence from September 22, when he attends the high-level session on indigenous people and population development. On the next day, he will take part in the UN climate change summit for which he has been invited by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. He is also scheduled to attend the dinner reception to be hosted by US President Barack Obama in honour of heads of state/government participating in the UN General Assembly. Though the name of delegates are yet to be finalised, the PM’s team will be small with some close aides, officials at the PMO and Foreign Ministry, personal security and mediapersons, officials said. Foreign Minister Mahendra Bahadur Pandey will leave for New York a few days after the prime minister, according to Adhikari.
