KATHMANDU: Chairperson of UCPN-Maoist Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who is also the coordinator of High Level Political Committee (HLPC), met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Neel Kantha Uprety in Kathmandu on Friday and discussed the preparations for holding the elections of the constituent assembly.
Dahal also held discussions with CEC Uprety regarding the ways to incorporate those who have not been enlisted in the voter’s list. After his meeting with Uprety, Dahal said that he was positive that some of the eligible voters, who have not been enlisted in the voter’s list, would be incorporated in some way.
“The chief election commissioner has assured that the EC will take a decision soon regarding the resumption of voter registration process after determining if it is possible to make any changes in the election schedule,” a source close to Dahal quoted him as saying.
The source further said the leaders had also discussed the issue at the High Level Political Committee meeting held earlier in the day, prompting Dahal to take up the issue during his meeting with the EC chief. The EC had launched a drive for registering voters´ name with photograph across the country till the second week of July. Of late, Madhes-bsed parties have been demanding more time for updating the electoral roll after the EC data showed that the number of voters have decreased in comparison to the last CA elections.
The former Prime Minister said that the ongoing efforts of the election preparations by the EC were satisfactory and that he was positive about the Constituent Assembly election slated for November 19. The EC has already made public the calendar of events for the upcoming CA election. So it is yet to see how the EC adjust the request of the political parties to incorporate all eligible voters.
