People of Kirant Community celebrate Sakela festival in Brunei


Roshan Mewahang / Brunei : Kirant Rai Yayokhya Federation organized a gala event in Brunei on the occasion of Sakela Ubhauli, the greatest festival of Kirant community.

The Program was attended by people of Kirant community where Chairperson of Sakela Federation Brunei social worker senior Captain Raghubir Rai participated as a chief guest.

Participants of the program also tried Sakela dance, which is popular in Kathmandy and some eastern towns like Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Bhojpur and Khotang. The festival is being celebrated in different countries like Sikkim of India, United States of America, United Kingdon, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Qatar and Brunei, where people of Kirant community has been staying.

Jitendra Bantawa Rai from Bhojpur remarks that the festival is important as it is celebrated to offer their crop to the god and also to remember their dead parents before consuming the new food. During the festival people of the Kirant community dance in a circle imitating the activities of birds and other animals. The festival is being celebrated by people of Kirant community twice a year in the name of Ubhauli and Udhauli.

Addressing the program former Captain Dambar rai, Captain Badri Rai, Captain Ram Rai informed that they could not forget their culture even they are in abroad. They also added that the program was organized to teach their children about their culture.

Similarly, Major Som Thulung concluded the program run by Bidur Raj Mukarung by thanking all the participants for attending the program despite their busy schedule to keep their culture alive.
