Over 50 Illegal Immigrant Workers arrested in Korea


SEOUL, KOREA: Over 50 Illegal Immigrant Workers, who have been working in different industries of South Korea, have been arrested by officials of Immigrant department.

Narad Sammekham Limbu, Yam Sherpa, Prem Limbu and Shekhar Subba were arrested from the office of Kirant Yakthung Chumlung, while they were participating at the monthly meeting of the organization.

Sammekham and Limbu are the former chairpersons of the organization. Similarly, the authorities arrested Kumar Thapa, Bharat Karki and Durga Chaulagain of Bhojpur and Shyam Karki of Khotang from a company. As per the information given by Thapa, the tendency of bringing illegal immigrants has been increasing. Along with arrested Nepalese, workers of Indonesia, Mongol, China and Vietnam have been facing stress as they failed to receive remuneration from the company on time.

Chairperson of Tamu-dhi Korea Ramkaji Gurung, along with three other persons, arrested on last Monday from the premises of Nepali Embassy.

Gurung, who is in the detention informed that he was arrested due to complaint filed by official at the Embassy Rajaram Gartaula. Nepali Ambassador to Koreal Kaman Singh Lama said it is sad that Gurung, who is also active in social work, was arrested in Korea.

Nepali residing in Korea has taken this incident seriously as the authorities do not have the right to arrest a person from the premises of Diplomatic mission as the law of host country is not applicable to that area.

Earlier 18 workers were arrested from a company of Chanan area, 20 arrested from Unjangbo, Kimpo and Inchan areas. According to the statistics of Immigration Department of Seoul, 909 Nepali immigrant workers, who came to Korea through EPS system, are in illegal status. There are over 70 thousand Chinese Immigrant workers are illegal in Korea.
