News Update—Last rites of former Premier Shrestha performed; Govt. offers state honor


KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister Marich Man Singh was cremated according to Hindu tradition at Pashupati Aryaghat in the Capital on Thursday. Earlier in the day, the government decided to accord state honor to the final rites of former Prime Minister Shrestha. His body was kept at his residence in Dhapasi during the day for final tributes.

A Cabinet meeting held this morning decided to honor the former prime minister with state honor. Home Minister Madhav Prasad Ghimire, who reached Dhapasi to offer his final condolence to late Shrestha, informed the family about the decision. However the Police Band could not provide guard of honor to former premier during the final rights following protest from his well-wishers and relatives. They have been protesting for not providing royal honor to him.

The government provided an ambulance and a team of eight persons for carrying the body. The government offered to provide two assistants for mourning rituals if the family desired so. However, his relatives and well-wishers chanted slogans for not giving royal honor to the former prime minister.

The government, which faced severe criticism for not providing money for treatment of former premier has decided to provide the state honor to avoid public wrath. All the social media were filled appreciating the nationalist stance of former Premier and deploring the government for not providing facility to former premier at par with other Prime Ministers formed after the restoration of multi-party democracy.

Shrestha, who was battling with lung cancer, passed away at around 3 this morning at Norvic Hospital in the Capital on Thursday morning. He was 71. He was kept on ventilator support in the hospital. Shrestha, who was suffering from cancer, was airlifted from New Delhi to Kathmandu on Tuesday night after he expressed his desire to die in his homeland and admitted at the hospital after no significant improvement in his condition.

Leaders of different political parties and well wishers paid last tributes to former prime minister at a condolence ceremony at his Dhapasi-based house on Thursday.

Leaders of various political parties including UCPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, CPN-Maoist Chairman Mohan Baidhya and Nepali Congress General Secretary Prakash Man Singh among others paid their last tributes to Shrestha.

Likewise, Chairman of Interim Election Council (IEC) Khil Raj Regmi along with ministers reached Dhapasi and extended condolences to the bereaved families of late leader Shrestha.

Shrestha became popular for his nationalistic stance when India imposed blocked during 1990s. He did not bend down towards Indian interference. Analysts have been underscoring the need of nationalist feeling like that shown by Shrestha in 1990s at present moment when the country is facing interference from its neighbors.
