Nepal’s local Authority directed not to appoint employees

KATHMANDU: Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration has directed all 753 local levels not to appoint permanent employees on their own. Section officer at local level coordination department in the Ministry, Janakraj Sharma, shared this information on Thursday.

The Ministry directed for this in the wake of vacancy announcements by some local levels reasoning that public service delivery was marred with the crunch of employees. Sharma further said the local levels were denied appointment because the existing law lacks any provision that they can fulfill the vacant posts on their own. They are asked to scrap the vacancy announcement as well.

According to section officer Sharma, the direction was given as per the decision of the Council of Ministers.
The Local Government Operation Act 2074 mentions that for the permanent appointment of employees at local level, Public Service Commission at State can take decision.

Earlier, the Ministry had sought the information about the vacant posts at local levels. As per the details furnished to the Ministry, some 10,000 employees were needed at 433 local levels.
