KATHMANDU: Malaysian police have arrested 42 workers after a riot by over 1000 mostly Nepali workers, who resorted to arson and vandalism at an electronic factory at Johor state, international news agency Reuters reported.
The migrant workers had turned violent after one Nepali worker Harka Bahadur Niraula from Jhapa working in factory died last Thursday after complaining of chest pains, Deputy Chief of Nepali Mission in Malaysia Hem Lal Bhattarai informed.
Workers had accused the firm of negligence after an employee at a nearby JCY factory died last Thursday after complaining of chest pains, Reuters quoted local news reports.
It is estimated that over 7,000 Nepali migrants have been working in the Johor alone in Malaysia.
The riot broke out in the southern industrial hub of Johor state on Tuesday at a factory run by JCY International (JCYI.KL), a Malaysian firm that makes parts for electronic giants including Samsung SAGR.UL, Hitachi (6501.T) and Western Digital (WDC.O).
According to the news report, the police arrested 42 men after a riot by up to 1,000 mostly Nepalese workers sparked fires and destroyed parts of an electronics export factory blaming it for poor conditions.
The unrest spilled over to the firm´s other factory in Kulaijaya, police said, culminating in a stand-off between riot police and protesters. The factory suspended operations on Wednesday,” Reuters report reads.
