Nepali teacher held for allegedly ‘insulting Islam’ released

KATHMANDU: Qatari authorities have released a Nepali national arrested for allegedly insulting Islam. According to an online news portal Doha News Dorje Gurung, a former Qatar Academy chemistry teacher, was freed from the Al Rayyan police station on Sunday afternoon.

Gurung had been denying the charge, which was reportedly pressed against him after he had an argument with a 12-year-old male student that two weeks ago.

A few weeks earlier, he had been relieved of his job shortly after the incident and had been set to leave the country last weekend. However, he was arrested.

A friend of Gurung’s said he cannot confirm whether the court cleared him of the charges or released him on bail. Gurung’s freedom followed widespread campaign in and outside Qatar for his release.

Gurung’s colleagues and well-wishers had posted online petitions, condemning the arrest. Nepali Ambassador to Qatar, Maya Kumari Sharma, said she is trying to seek more information on the matter.
