Nepali rail to get access up to Kolkata


KATHMANDU: India has agreed to allow two-way operation of Nepali rail service from Biratnagar and Birgunj to Kolkata-Haldiya. The agreement was reached during the third detailed review meeting of the Nepal-India railway service agreement held in New Delhi, India on June 6 and 7.
Speaking at a press meet to share about the decisions of the meeting here today, Secretary at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies Kedar Bahadur Adhikari shared that an agreement was also reached to make, as per the transit treaty, necessary amendment in the railway service to also allow bulk cargo via rail from Biratnagar and Bhairahawa transits. Furthermore, additions will be made in the agreement after the Biratnagar-Jogbani, Sunauli-Nautanawa and Kurtha-Inarwa railway service comes into operation.
The Nepal-India railway service agreement was renewed for another five years. An agreement has also been reached for Nepal to send a draft of the matters discussed in the third detail review meeting and amend the railway service agreement accordingly to ease transit and transportation. The Dhamra and Mundra sea ports added to the Nepal-India transit treaty will also be added to the railway service agreement.
During the meeting, the Indian side has also agreed to expand electronic railway line up to the dry port in Birgunj. The fourth meeting will be held in Kathmandu within the next six months. Joint Secretary at the Ministry Nawaraj Dhakal led the Nepali side in the meeting while the Indian side was led by Executive Director of the Railways Ministry of India Manoj Kumar Srivastav.
