Nepali Congress’s KC roots for fresh election

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress leader Arjun Narsingh KC has suggested holding general election than reviving the defunct Constituent Assembly for bailing the country out of the current political impasse.

Addressing at a talk programme organized by the Conflict, Peace and Development Studies Ex- students’ Association here on Monday, he stressed that in a democracy only a fresh election could establish the supremacy of the people.

Reinstating the defunct Constituent Assembly (CA) would be tantamount to gping against the spirit of the Supreme Court’s verdict, and the issue of state restructuring should be finalized before holding the fresh election, he said.

CPN (UML) leader Ghanshyam Bhusal said the deficit of trust among the major political parties was the root of the present political deadlock. He urged the leaders of the major political parties to seek solution to the growing political rift among the parties before it jeopardizes the national independence.

UCPN (Maoist) leader Ram Karki opined that the newly-established republic could not take roots in the country until the problems faced by the minorities, backward and oppressed communities were addressed.

Senior journalist Yubaraj Ghimire said the CA shifting its timetable and extending own term frequently and the political parties’ inability to keep to the timetable are the major causes of the failure of the CA.

Journalist Ghimire urged the party leadership to be serious for consolidating the national unity while at the same time preserving the cultural diversity in the country. RSS
