KATHMANDU: The process of integrating former People’s Liberation Army (PLA) that fought the decade long armed insurgency against the state into Nepali Army is concluding soon with the Nepali Army making public the Army Integration Process.
According to Nepali Army, one of the former PLA fighters who have been integrated into the Nepali Army following the peace process, will be appointed to the post of colonel after three months. Nepali Army spokesperson Suresh Sharma informed that the former PLA would be promoted to the post after he completes a three-month-long bridge course. Two former PLA commanders will become lieutenant colonels.
Organizing a press meet at Nepal Army headquarters on Sunday, Nepal Army published the ranks of the former Maoist combatants who opted to be integrated into the state army. The directorate with the strength of 4,000 personnel will be comprised of 35 percent former combatants and 65 percent Nepal Army personnel.
The NA has granted the post of officers to 71 former Maoist combatants who went through training under Nepal Army while the remaining 1,373 combatants will be accommodated to various posts of Nepal Army.
Santu Darai, who led the PLA’s Seventh Division based in Kailali, has been widely tipped to become Nepali Army colonel.. The forty-five-year-old once led UCPN-M chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s security team.
As per the Article 146 of Interim Constitution, the Special Committee had recommended the government to integrate the willing former Maoist combatants into the NA.
