LOS ANGELES, (AFP):- Several Nepali doctors from around the world underpinned the need to address health issues of Nepali in India and assist in getting the minimum requirements for the isolation and quarantine of those who are exposed to the infected, and for safe repatriation for those who are willing to return home.
The meeting was organized by Health Committee of non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) on Sunday, June 22 that was participated by several Nepali working in serving in India.
Nepali in India constitute the largest portion of the population of Nepali outside of Nepal, but their health issues, infection rate has been largely stayed in darkness thus far, said Dr. Sanjeeb Sapkota, the chair of the Health Committee of NRNA.
Around 3 million people of Nepali origin reside in India, most of them are migrant workers, but other are students, business persons and residents.
“There are at least 150 people of Nepali origin infected with Corona virus in India,” said Dr. Sagar Paudel. Dr. Paudel, a consultant at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), shared that he is overseeing several infected individuals of Nepali origin in AIIMS.
Mr. Bal Krishna Pandey, a social worker stressed the need of wider collaboration among stakeholders to improve the health condition of Nepali in India.
Several members of NRNA High level Committee on Corona Pandemic Mitigation participated and offered key strategic advice at the meeting. They include Dr. Puru Shrestha, Dr. Alini Pokharel Subedi, and Dr. Sanjeeb Sapkota.
Dr. Puru Shrestha mentioned the need of a team such as ‘India Team’ that closely looks into the situation of Nepali in India.
Dr. Alini Pokharel Subedi who has long emphasized the inclusion of Nepali in India in the discussion, planning and implementations of NRNA programs said such team would have positive far reaching implications.
The meeting was moderated by Dr. Sanjeeb Sapkota, the chair of Health Committee of NRNA. “Excluding Nepali in India out of the Pandemic equation would translate into exponential surge in the Infection rate,” Said Dr. Sapkota.
