Nepal trek brings fathers and sons together

FATHER and son Richard and Andrew Thompson have been preparing themselves for the unique challenge of trekking in Nepal during the next school holidays.

Together with eight other fathers and their sons, who range from Years 9-11, they will spend six days in Kathmandu and nine days of trekking in the Kanchenjunga region.

The trip was organised by Prince Alfred College middle schoolteacher Andrew Stace, who has travelled several times to Nepal over the past decade.

Mr Thompson said the trip would be a bonding experience between fathers and sons, but also a lesson for young people to help develop a sense of community responsibility while seeing another culture.

“I also have a strong feeling about children being brought up without realising they are privileged and therefore they need to gain a concept of social responsibility and to be compassionate,” he said.

“We are looking forward to meeting people of another culture and understanding that having a western culture doesn’t mean you have the best one.

“It’s important for father and son to have a couple of weeks without technology. It increases the level of communication.”

While abroad the group will deliver a $4000 donation to the Himalayans Children’s Education Foundation and travel to the remote Kanchenjunga region to give sporting equipment to schools.
