Nepal Government vaccinating 2.7 million senior citizens against coronavirus

Ministry of Health is preparing to vaccinate senior citizens, teachers, and public transport employees above 60 years of age from March 8. The cabinet meeting had decided to vaccinate citizens above 55 years of age in the second phase. The ministry is now preparing to involve only those above 60 years of age in the vaccination campaign.

N24 Staff Writer:- One million doses of vaccine purchased by the Government of Nepal arrived in Kathmandu on Sunday. The Covishield vaccine purchased from the Serum Institute of India was brought from an Air India flight on Sunday.

The Government of Nepal has already sent funds for the purchase of 2 million doses of vaccine from the Serum Institute. The Department of Health Services has informed that it has agreed to provide the remaining 1 million vaccines as per the demand of Nepal.

Earlier, the vaccination campaign was started in Nepal on January 29 with the 1 million doses of Covishield vaccine provided by India. The campaign will continue after the additional 1 million doses of vaccine purchased now become available and the government will reach out to the community and vaccinate the citizens.

The vaccines available in the grant were initially given to frontline workers including health workers, cleaners, ambulance drivers, and hearse drivers. It was then given to journalists and staff of diplomatic missions. Currently, the vaccine is being administered by the employees of banks and financial institutions, employees of the Department of Survey and District Administration Office. Out of the 1 million vaccines received in the grant, 4 hundred 2 thousand people have been vaccinated till Saturday evening.

Now, the Ministry of Health is preparing to vaccinate senior citizens, teachers, and public transport employees above 60 years of age from March 8. The cabinet meeting had decided to vaccinate citizens above 55 years of age in the second phase. The ministry is now preparing to involve only those above 60 years of age in the vaccination campaign. However, the Ministry of Health and Population has informed that the priority can be changed depending on the availability of vaccines.

The ministry plans to vaccinate about 2.7 million senior citizens. There may be some fluctuations in this figure, said Dr. Sameer Adhikari explains. “According to government figures, not all people are vaccinated, we estimate 2.7 million,” he said.

The Ministry of Health has stated that the vaccination of senior citizens will be continued with 2 million doses of vaccine provided by the Government of India and an additional 2.2 million doses through Covax.
