N24 Correspondent, KATHMANDU:- Nepal’s Ambassador to the UK Lokdarshan Regmi’s attention has been drawn on the issue of Ex Gurkhas. Representatives of the Gurkha Ex-Servicemen’s Association (GESO) and the Gurkha Satyagraha Struggle Committee jointly met in Kathmandu on Tuesday and demanded that the newly-appointed ambassador, Regmi, take the initiative to resolve the Gurkha issues.
According to GESSO Central President Krishna Kumar Rai, who participated in the meeting with the Ambassador, the Gurkhas had earlier stated that a solution to the problem should be found on the basis of the 13-point recommendation submitted by the tripartite mechanism.
“The governments of both countries have signed the recommendation with the participation of the Gurkhas along with the governments of the United Kingdom and Nepal. We urge you to create an environment conducive to the implementation of this agreement as soon as possible,” Chairman Rai told Nepal24hours.com.
Stating that the British government was reluctant to implement the recommendations of the mechanism, the Gorkhas urged Ambassador Regmi to exert pressure on behalf of the Government of Nepal.
“We all have a clear view that our issues should be sorted out as soon as possible through high-level talks between the two countries,” he said. “Understanding this sentiment, the Ambassador has been requested to take a strong stand and take diplomatic initiative on behalf of the Government of Nepal,” said Rai.
Ambassador Regmi had committed to giving special importance and priority to the issues of Gurkhas as it was a matter of national importance. Stating that he has clear guidelines from the Government of Nepal to solve the issues of Gorkhas, he expressed confidence that this problem can be resolved through diplomatic initiatives.
He told the Gurkhas that the only way to solve the problem was to trust the British government’s initiative. “We need to move forward with confidence in the UK government through the diplomatic initiative.”
Five representatives of both the organizations led by GESSO President Krishna Kumar Rai and Satyagraha Nepal Coordinator LB Ghising went to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to hold discussions with the newly appointed Ambassador Regmi. During the discussion, on behalf of GESSO, Chairman Rai handed over a memorandum to Ambassador Regmi with a demand to take all possible initiatives for the implementation of the 13-point recommendation.
