Nepal floods not caused by release of dam water, says India

KATHMANDU: Some media reports in Nepal have blamed the release of water from reservoir of the 280 MW Dhauliganga hydroelectric project for floods that resulted in the loss of lives and caused heavy damage to the property in Nepal this week.

India has refuted media reports blaming the release of excess water from the Dhauliganga dam in Uttarakhand for the heavy floods in western Nepal.

Some media reports in Nepal have blamed the release of water from reservoir of the 280 MW Dhauliganga hydroelectric project for floods that resulted in the loss of lives and caused heavy damage to the property in Nepal this week.

At least 40 people were killed and 19 others have gone missing in the recent floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains mainly in western Nepal districts such as Darchula.

“As the Dhauliganga Hydroelectric Power Station is a run-of-the-river project based on a small daily reservoir without any change in storage levels, the question of India releasing the dam water simply does not arise,” an Indian Embassy statement said.

“The Dhauliganga Dam has no impact on monsoon related flooding in the downstream areas of India and Nepal,” the statement said.

The Indian side has also suffered loss of life and property as a result of the heavy monsoon in the catchment areas, the statement said referring to the current flood disaster in Uttarakhand, and added that concerned agencies of the Indian government are working closely in coordination with those of Nepal to deal with the situation.
