
KATHMANDU:- A total of 4,296 votes have been cast in the voting that took place to elect a new leadership of the ruling Nepali Congress party under its 14th General Convention. The 4,296 votes were cast in the polling until 9:00 pm, after starting at around 12 noon.
There are 487 candidates vying for 132 posts of office-bearers of the party’s leadership. Arrangements had been made for voting to take place in the City Hall and in Bhrikuti Mandap. According to the NC Central Election Committee, 1,382 votes have been cast in the City Hall and 2,914 in the Bhrikuti Mandap centre.
Congress leader Kul Bahadur Gurung had cast the first vote. According to the Congress statute, out of the 167-member working committee, 134 posts will be elected and the remaining 33 members will be nominated by the central president.
The official number of delegates to the 14th General Convention is 4,743.
Meanwhile, the time for voting has been extended for the second time today, to take it to 10:30 pm. Earlier, it was scheduled to be held until 9:00 pm. However, the time had to be extended considering the votes cast so far, and the number of eligible voters, said election committee coordinator Gopal Krishna Ghimire.
