Naag Panchami festival being celebrated today by offering prayers to serpent god

KATHMANDU: Hindus devotees across the country are celebrating the Naag (the serpent god) Panchami festival on Sunday by paying homage to serpents.

The festival which is observed on the fifth day of the bright half of the Nepali month of Shrawan as per the lunar calendar is celebrated by worshipping images or live Nags.

Honoring the serpent god, the devotees perform pooja and paste portraits of Naags over the main gates of their houses. People make offerings of the dubo grass, milk and the paste of rice grains, red vermilion powder and yoghurt known as akshata to the Nag deity.

There is a religious belief that pasting the picture of the serpent god above the main door of houses and offering worship to the deity on this day protects the house from lightning and fire and the family from snakes and scorpions.

According to Hindu scriptures, the serpent-gods are protector of earth and associated to rain. People believe that worship of Naags insures that there will be no drought.

Nag Pokhari, Taudaha of Kathmandu, Nagdaha of Lalitpur and Siddhapokhari of Bhaktapur are some of the famous shrines for the devotees in the Kathmandu Valley. Special religious fairs are also held at different Naaga kunda or ponds dedicated to the serpent deity throughout the country today.
