Maoist’s extended meeting starts discussion on chairperson’s proposal; Shrestha and Bogati resign

KATHMANDU: The second day of the extended meeting of the UCPN-Maoist has begun group discussion on the special organizational political proposal floated by Chairperson of the party.

The meeting undergoing at Khanna Garment in Balkumari has been discussing the proposal in 16 separate groups. Spokesperson of the party Agni Prasad Sapkota informed that team leader of each group will present the conclusion of the concerned groups.

In his proposal tabled on Friday, Chairperson Dahal had floated the proposal to dissolve the four office bearers’ positions and keeping only the post of Chairman and rest of the others as Central Committee members. However party vice-chairperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha and General Secretary of the party Posta Bahadur Bogati have been opposing the proposal floated by party chairperson. They duo have been trying to retain their positions won from Hetauda convention.

The meeting of the 500-member extended plenum was called after leader Baburam Bhattarai stepped down on June 30 to ‘build a culture of sacrifice in the party and promote the new generation.’ Dr. Bhattarai decided to step down from the party position following dispute on the division of portfolios.

Earlier, the seventh general convention held in Hetauda in February had formed a team of office-bearers consisting of Chairman, Vice-Chairmen and General Secretary including Secretary and Treasurer as per the necessity.

As the party president tabled the proposal only to retain the party chairperson and dismiss all the part positions, vice-chairperson Shrestha and General Secretary Bogati resigned from their posts. However it is said that both the leaders are not happy on the proposal of party president. Party president has floated the proposal based on his agreement with another vice-chairperson Dr. Bhattarai, who resigned from the party portfolio.
