Maoist Chair Prachanda for cross-party poll alliance; NC leader rules out single-identity based federalism

NEPALGUNJ: As the elections of the constituent assembly approaching, leaders of different political parties have been teaming up for garnering victory in the election. In similar bid, chairperson of UCPN-Maoist Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that a cross-party poll alliance could be forged to ascertain that top leaders of major parties get elected in the Constituent Assembly elections.

The political parties have been mulling for such alliance as they were defamed to the public for not being able to produce the new constitution during the four-year long tenure of the first constituent assembly. “The first Constituent Assembly could not draft a new constitution, mainly because the top-most leaders of almost all parties could not be elected in the House. We should make them victorious at any cost,” Dahal said.

Commenting about the poll opposing CPN-Maoist led by Mohan Baidya, Dahal said the High Level Political Mechanism has vested the right to convince Baidya to Nepali Congress president Sushil Koirala. Dahal said talks are being held with Baidya group on party unification, but ruled out any such possibility at the moment.

Dahal however ruled out the possibility of merger of two factions of Maoist party. We may have some sort of electoral alliance with Baidya led CPN-Maoist but the unity may take place in the future after the election of the constituent assembly. The Election Commission has been saying that it would be difficult to incorporate more political parties for the polls but the parties are still trying to bring poll opposing alliance on board. The EC should go for printing the ballot paper for completing the election on November 19.

Meanwhile, Nepali Congress (NC) Spokesperson Dilendra Prasad Badu has said that the NC would not accept the single-identity based federalism. Speaking at a program in Mahendranagar, Badu claimed that the erstwhile Constituent Assembly (CA) was dissolved due to the UCPN-Maoist and added that federalism should carved out based on feasibility not on single ethnic line.

He assured the party cadres about the timely CA election as efforts were underway to bring the CPN-Maoist and other agitating parties on board. The NC leader directed the party cadres to unite for forthcoming CA election.

The first Constituent Assembly failed to promulgate new constitution during the four-year long tenure of the Constituent Assembly as the political parties failed to find consensus on some contentious issues like number of federal states, form of governance among others.
