KATHMANDU: Major leaders of Madhes-based political parties skipped the meeting summoned by Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party Chairman Mahantha Thakur in a bid of forming an alliance for the upcoming elections of the constituent assembly.
Even leaders from Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM), an alliance of five Madhes-based parties, were not present in the meeting called by Thakur. Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Nepal Chairman Upendra Yarav also did not feature at today’s meeting.
Thakur had organized a tea reception at Amrit Bhog, Kalikastan, in the capital on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti. Leaders Bijay Kumar Gachhadar, Rajendra Mahato, Mahendra Yadav and Raj Kishor Yadav were the other prominent leaders who avoided today’s meeting. JP Guta, Sarat Singh Bhandari, Sarita Giri Anil Jha, Amar Yadav, Khusilal Mandal, among others, however, were present in the meeting.
It is said that some foreign powers especially India is in favor of forming an alliance of Madhesh based parties during the upcoming election of the constituent assembly so that it could have influence in the national politics.
Meanwhile, Indian Ambassador Jayanta Prasad reached Bir Hospital in Kathmandu today to find out the health condition of Sadbhawana Party Chairman Rajendra Mahato , who has been hospitalized after deterioration of his health due to hunger strike .
The government on Friday had forcefully hauled Mahato into an ambulance and had taken him to Bir Hospital from Shanti Batika in Ratna Park after deterioration of his health condition.
Mahato had been staging a hunger strike at Shanti Batika for the past four days demanding the government to immediately declare the date of the Constituent Assembly polls.
His party has been agitating putting forth a 10-point charter of demands which also includes the formation of a constituency delimitation commission. Earlier today, Home Minister Madav Ghimire, too, reached Bir Hospital to consult about Mahato’s health condition. Ghimire said that the government was serious about the demands put forth by Sadhbhawana.
