KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML has organized various programs on Friday to commemorate the 20th death anniversary of its then general secretary Madan Kumar Bhandari and chief of Organizational Department Jib Raj Ashrit.
Most of the party committees in the districts organized programs to mark the 20th Madan Bhandari and Jib Raj Ashrit Memorial Day.
Addressing a program at Dasdhunga in Chitwan where Bhandari and the then politburo member Ashrit had died in a mysterious jeep accident on this day in 1993, senior leader of the party Madhav Kumar Nepal said the Maoists should answer why they killed Bhandari’s driver Amar Lama, who was the only witness of the jeep accident. He claimed that Lama was killed as there was the possibility of untangling the mystery of the Dasdhunga incident if he remained alive, adding that it is sad that the guilty of the incident was not found though investigation commissions were formed in government, party and the public level.
Nepal was appointed party’s general secretary after Bhandari’s death. Although CPN-UML has been blaming different parties for being responsible for the incident it did not do anything while the party was in the government three times. Earlier the party organized various protest programs claiming that the incident was the conspiracy and earlier government failed to carry out impartial investigation.
Bhandari, who was regarded as the most influential and charismatic communist leader at that time, had propounded ‘people’s mufti-party democracy’, which remains the UML’s guiding principle
Addressing a program organized by the party at its headquarters in Balkhu on the occasion of the 20th Madan-Ashrit Memorial Day, Chairperson of the party Jhalanath Khanal claimed that CPN-UML would emerge as a largest party in the upcoming elections of the constituent assembly.
He claimed that the CPN-UML will take important tasks including constitution building to a logical conclusion by establishing itself as the first power in the next election. Stating that Madan Bhandari and Jibraj Ashrit had made important contributions to the Nepali communist movement, the CPN-UML chairman mentioned that the country has reached to this situation based on their very principles. He stressed on the need of taking the course of action of People’s Multiparty Democracy to a logical conclusion.
