Leaders of major parties doubt November poll

KATHMANDU: With the approaching date for the elections of the constituent assembly, leaders have divided over whether the election would take place on November 19 as announced by the government or not. They expression suspicion as the disgruntled parties are yet to reach into consensus for the elections.

Speaking at an interaction in the Capital, Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has ruled out the Constituent Assembly (CA) polls unless the major political parties, dissenting parties, government and international powers arrive at a common ground.

He further said that the November 19 election is unlikely to happen for these forces are yet to reach a common ground. He also alleged that UCPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal is directing his cadres to chase away the poll-opposing parties, while leader Dr. Baburam Bhattarai objecting to the relief distribution to the flood victims by the former king. This shows their indisposition towards polls, he argued.

According to Dr. Koirala, two agitating fronts — led by Upendra Yadav and Ashok Rai — will agree to the CA polls if Interim Election Council Chairman Khil Raj Regmi quits as Chief Justice, and the CA size and proportional representation are kept unaltered.

Likewise, Chief of CPN-UML’s Publicity Department Pradeep Gyawali also expressed his doubts over the November 19 polls, referring to the activities of protesting parties and the Tarai-based underground outfits.

He also urged the four political parties to adopt maximum flexibility, except on deferring the election date and change of guard of government, to bring the protesting parties on board the election process. He lamented the purported collaboration between CPN-Maoist and the royalist forces.

Similarly, speaking at a press meet organized by UCPN-Maoist affiliated Revolutionary Journalist Association, UCPN-Maoist central member Haribol Gajurel said the nation would be pushed into uncertainty if the second Constituent Assembly election was not held on November 19.

He also said that the nation would plunge into a grave crisis if the election could not take place in the scheduled date, underlining the need of unity among all the political forces to prevent the nation from witnessing further crisis.

Rather than concentrating on the elections of the constituent assembly and bring all disgruntled parties on board the major political parties have been involved in some petty issues.
